Tissue Simulating Media for RF Safety Evaluation in MR Scanners

The dielectric properties of different body tissues vary by more than one order of magnitude at MR frequencies. The thermal properties of body tissue show even greater variations. Therefore, standards-setting committees have defined standard tissue simulating materials such as gels and liquids to permit the quantification of the worst-case energy induced particular to an AIMD such that it can be accurately transformed to in vivo temperature increase.

The TSM must be readily available, easy to apply, stable over time and have a minimal temperature coefficient. Additionally TSM must be innocuous to personnel and the environment when disposed.

ZMT develops liquids and gels for SAR and temperature evaluations that fulfil the above descriptions. Furthermore, low and high conductivity media meet the specifications of the ISO/IEC AIMD JWG Test Plan and are valid for 1.5 T and 3.0 T scanners.

The following liquids and gels are available (in 10 liter quantity). Additional TSM available on request.
